Wiki How

Page history last edited by PBworks 16 years, 11 months ago

This is a wiki.  What that means is that this website is built on technology meant to be collaborative, which is to say, meant for you to add to it.  That is right, you there, reading this tutorial, on the other side of the fourth wall.  See up there on the bar above the text how it says "Edit page"?  Just think of it as a tiny Alice in Wonderland mushroom says "eat me!"  You can click it & start editing the page you're viewing.  Type whatever you want!  Don't worry about messing up; no matter how colossal you might goof up, it can always be reverted (easily!) by another user.  Don't have anything to add to the page, but have a comment to make about it?  Click the "Comments" button & talk away!

If you want to go crazy experimenting, try out the sandbox.  You can write anything you want there: think of it as a scratch pad.  It is your wiki laboratory, ready to have whatever mad experiments done to it that you might have.  If you are interested in more high-end editing tips, check out WikiStyle & get into the mud & the blood.  If you're just interested in the concept of a wiki, find out more at Wikipedia's article on wikis.  Some general questions:

How do I start writing?

Find a page you want to add something to and click EDIT PAGE at the top.  When you're done, click SAVE at the bottom.  Easy peasy.

To help find a starting point, you can take a look at the list of pages already in existence on our wiki.

How do I bold/italicize/underline text?  (Or other text-formatting thing.)

Pretty easy, if you've ever used any Microsoft Word kind of program.  Once you're actually typing, all the important options are in the toolbar above.

How do I add a picture to an article?

Click INSERT IMAGE on the toolbar at the top of the editing screen.  You can either upload a new picture or pick from one of the images already uploaded.  To upload a new picture, just click BROWSE and find it on your computer and then UPLOAD.  If it's super gigantic you might need to resize it to make it fit in the article, which you can do in the same editing window.  Just click the photo itself and the little white resize tabs should appear on the sides and corners of the picture; grab one of the corner ones with the mouse pointer and you pull it towards the center of the photo to change its dimensions.

How do I add one of those little orange links?  They're cute.

To open the menu, click the tab on the editing toolbar that has a weird Earth and infinity symbol and says LINK.  There are a couple varieties:

  • Linking to an article already on the Wedding Wiki: Open the link tab and click the "Link to wiki page" drop-down menu to get a list of Wedding Wiki articles already in existence.  Click on the article you want to link to and then click OK at the bottom of the menu, and it'll be inserted into the text.
  • Creating an article link that doesn't use the same text as the article title.  You can also link to an article and have something OTHER than the article title appear as the linktext.  For example, if you want to say "Jenny proposed to mordicai" and have "proposed" link to the engaged article (which talks about the proposal), just follow the steps above to add the "engaged" link, but before you click OK, change the text in the LINK TEXT field to say what you want it toLike so: Jenny proposed to Mordicai.
  • Creating a link that goes to any website that's not the Wedding Wiki.  Open the link tab, and click on the LINK TYPE drop-down menu.  Choose URL.  Then paste the address of the website you want to link to in the URL field, and the text you want the link to appear under in the LINK TEXT field.  Example: to link to M & Jenny's crazy neopet obsession, you could put http://www.neopets.com/ in the URL field and "crazy neopet obsession" in the LINK TEXT field and get crazy neopet obsession.

How do I create a new article?

Two ways:

  • Simple: In the SEARCH HERE box at the upper right hand corner of the page, type something you want to search for.  Say, "tomatoes", which neither M nor Jenny likes.  You will find that there is no "tomatoes" page, but a link to Create page: tomatoes.  Click on that and start typing.  When you're done, click SAVE.  You will have just created the "tomatoes" article.  (But don't do that because neither Jenny nor M likes 'em.)
  • Only slightly more complicated.  You can add a link to an article that doesn't actually exist (yet) if you think you or someone else might eventually create it.  This is useful as a placeholder to remind you you wanted to add something even though you're not actually going to do it right this second.  Open the LINK tab on the editing toolbar, but don't click the "Link to wiki page" drop-down menu; leave it as "-new page-".  Then put the name of the page you want to create (or just think should exist) in the NEW PAGE NAME field, and what you want to appear as in this article in the LINK TEXT field.  Then click OK.  Example, if you wanted to create a link to the nonexistent page "hoboes in libraries" (a not-uncommon fixture in Jenny's life), you might put library hobo as both the NEW PAGE NAME and LINK TEXT, or tall scary hoboes in libraries in the LINK text (to serve the need of the article you're writing), while still linking back to library hobo (indicating a more general overview of the subject).
  • Wait, that's just a link.  How do I create those pages?  You'll notice that library hobo, unlike most of the other links in the Wiki, is underlined with a dotted line instead of a solid one.  Links underlined with a dotted line are links to articles that don't yet exist.  Click on that dotted-line link and you'll go directly to an editing field for that article.  Type something and click SAVE, and you will have just created that article.  Thanks!

How do I...?

Whatever it is, just post it here and someone will answer it.

Can I really just type anything?

We're seriously not kidding.  Go for it.

This sucks, nothing's working.

If all else fails, drop a line to Mordicai (mordicai@gmail.com) or Ford MF (fordmadoxfraud@gmail.com), both of whom have lots of free time at work.

I realized after I wrote all this that PBWiki kind of had its own tutorial page, but having one actually on your Wiki in your (my) words is maybe better.

Yeah, definately better; the style guide isn't the greatest.

I can't even get some of the stuff on their style guide to work, either, like the <random> page function.
